Overview of the County
map of the rural district as part of Lower Saxony Direct in front of the gates of the Hanseatic city Bremen lies the county Osterholz. Our neighboring districts are Cuxhaven in the north, Rotenburg (Wümme) in the east and Verden in the south-east. Wesermarsch lies in the west, across the river Weser.
The county Osterholz consists of the city Osterholz-Scharmbeck, the municipality Hambergen, the communities Grasberg, Lilienthal, Ritterhude, Schwanewede and Worpswede, which is known as the "village of artists".
With almost 650 square kilometers and about 112.000 citizens, the county Osterholz stretches from one of the longest river isles in Europe, the Harriersand in the river Unterweser, deep into a moor steeped in legend, the Teufelsmoor.
The landscape is thus varied and ideal for local recreation; the meadows of Wümmewiesen, the Weser isle Harriersand, the moraine landscape of the Bremer Schweiz and the grassland of Hammewiesen belong to the most popular destinations for excursions in northern Germany.
The harsh beauty of the landscape, the extraordinary light and the special charm of the citizens combine to an atmosphere, which magically attracted well known artists such as Heinrich Vogeler, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Rainer Maria Rilke and many others, already over a hundred years ago.
Even though Osterholz is a beloved recreational area and cherishes its traditions, Osterholz still keeps the future in mind and offers an attractive and powerful economic region with fully developed infrastructure and diverse industrial zones. The two main transport axes A 27 and B74 closely tie the county to the economic region Bremen-Unterweser. The county is also a committed member of the metropolitan region Bremen-Oldenburg in the north-west.
Young families find appealing living, educational and recreational possibilities - a life in the countryside with a big city close by.
The long-established dwellers already know the charm of our landscape and its many delightful features. We bid all others a warm welcome
