grave of the hunts (a tribe of Germans) The county Osterholz received its name 'Osterholz' from the district’s former convent. Until the Thirty Years’ War the convent, as well as the neighboring convent Lilienthal, was part of the archdiocese Bremen. From both convents church offices evolved, which became official polities of the electorate Hannover in 1719. In 1823 the church office of Osterholz and the church office of Lilienthal became a part of the Landdrostei Stade in the kingdom Hannover.
The district Osterholz was formed out of the church offices Osterholz and Lilienthal by the Prussian government in 1885. The former district Blumenthal was incorporated in 1932, but 1939 a part of the communities that had been incorporated (Aumund, Blumenthal, Farge, Grohn, Lesum and Schönebeck) were given to the city Bremen. Thus the district Osterholz lost a large part of its inhabitants. With this reorganization of local government, the district received its name as the county Osterholz. The last changes ensued with the local government reform in 1974, when the communities Axstedt and Lübberstedt, formerly belonging to the countys of Wesermünde and Weserinsel Harriersand, were incorporated.
